Description
Taftan (also spelled Taptan; about 3,941 m, with variable heights reported approaching 4,000 m) is an active stratovolcano in southeastern Iran, in Sistan and Baluchestan province, and the highest mountain in that region. Its nearest city is Khash. The name 'Taftan' means 'blistering, smoldering, fuming' in Balochi and Persian — a reference to its still-living fumarolic activity. It has two main summits: the older, northwestern Narkuh (with two craters) and the southeastern Madehkuh (Materkuh), which is ringed by fresh-looking lava flows and holds at least three craters with active sulfur fumaroles whose steam is visible from a great distance. Its principal rock is andesite, and it forms part of the Makran volcanic arc together with Bazman (Iran) and Koh-i-Sultan (Pakistan), built by subduction of the Arabian Plate beneath Iran. Long considered inactive, Sentinel-1 satellite InSAR research (published 2025) detected a summit uplift of about 9 cm between July 2023 and May 2024 — the first confirmed volcanic unrest in the Makran arc, attributed to gas pressure in the hydrothermal system rather than fresh magma intrusion. For Iranian mountaineers, Taftan is a demanding objective combining remote desert terrain, hot springs on its flanks, and steaming summit craters.

Trek non-teknis namun panjang dan terpencil; berketinggian dengan medan gurun-vulkanik keringClimbs of Taftan generally start from the city of Khash in Sistan and Baluchestan province, then head to the foothill villages before ascending the slopes toward the active Madehkuh (Materkuh) summit, which is ringed by lava flows and fumarolic craters. The route is non-technical but demanding because of its remoteness, dry terrain, and scarcity of water — so climbers must carry enough water and usually make a high camp to break the ascent. Near the summit, steam and the smell of sulfur from active fumaroles are Taftan's signature; climbers are advised to be cautious of volcanic gases around the craters. The summit views stretch far across the Baluchestan desert.
