Description
Mount Tabwemasana (1,879 m) is the highest peak in all of Vanuatu and one of the tallest non-volcanic summits in the Pacific island region. Located in west-central Espiritu Santo island (Sanma Province), it is smothered in dense tropical rainforest up to a cloud-forest belt near the summit — an ecosystem harbouring endemic species, including the tree Metrosideros tabwemasanaensis found nowhere else. The summit consists of two knolls (locally known as the 'male' and 'female' peaks) which local cosmology holds secretly embrace at night beneath a blanket of cloud. The first documented ascent was made by British zoologist John R. Baker during the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund Expedition to the New Hebrides in 1922–1923, navigating dense rainforest from the west coast of Espiritu Santo. To this day fewer than ten people per year reach the summit — not because of technical altitude, but because of isolation, unmarked trails, and terrain demanding high stamina. The standard route starts from Luganville by vehicle to Tasiriki (~2 hours), then a local boat to Kerepua Village, followed by 10 hours of hard trekking to a first-night basecamp and another 4 hours to the summit the following day. Views from the top span the Coral Sea and the rolling green ridges of Espiritu Santo. The upper cloud forest is draped in orchids, endemic birds, and mossy vegetation, lending the summit an ethereal atmosphere among the clouds.
Routes
Ekspedisi 6 Hari (Itinerari Resmi Vanuatu Tourism)
Jalur Kerepua – Puncak (Rute Standar)
Biasanya diatur bersama operator Wrecks to Rainforest (Luganville).
Climbing Experiences
Experiences on Mount Tabwemasana are rare adventures — fewer than ten people per year reach the highest peak in Vanuatu. Trip reports describe a combination that is both physically demanding and deeply rewarding: a boat journey from Tasiriki to Kerepua Village, a long trek through river valleys with repeated river crossings, then a steep ascent through increasingly dense tropical rainforest turning into a mysterious cloud forest. Local guides from Kerepua are essential since the route is unmarked and challenging. Recurring themes: total isolation from civilisation, the ethereal cloud forest atmosphere draped in orchids and mosses, warmth from local communities, and immense satisfaction at being among the handful of people ever to stand on this summit.
