Information

Elevation
1.375 m
Country
Australia (AU)
Location / Range
Main Range (Great Dividing Range), Taman Nasional Main Range, kawasan Scenic Rim, Queensland tenggara
Mountain type
Sumbat vulkanik — sisa gunung api perisai Main Range yang meletus sekitar 25–22 juta tahun lalu dan kini tersingkap oleh erosi; puncak tertutup hutan hujan tanpa pemandangan, ditandai kairan kecil
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
-28.2164, 152.4664
Difficulty
Berat / off-track: tidak ada jalur resmi bertanda — pendaki mengikuti jejak samar (footpad) dan pita penanda merah muda sesekali menembus hutan hujan lebat. Naik turun sekitar 600 m; tantangan utama adalah navigasi karena jejak sangat mudah hilang, sehingga GPS sangat dianjurkan
Best Season

Description

Mount Superbus (1,375 m) is the highest mountain in south-east Queensland and the fifth-highest peak in the state, standing in Main Range National Park within the Great Dividing Range of the Scenic Rim, about 99 km south-west of Brisbane near the Queensland–New South Wales border. Geologically it is a volcanic plug — the eroded remnant of the Main Range shield volcano that erupted tens of millions of years ago. Unlike other popular summits, Superbus has no formal trail: the climb is entirely off-track, following a faint footpad and occasional marking tape through dense rainforest, so navigation is the main challenge, and the summit itself is forest-enclosed with no views, marked only by a small cairn and a tin box. Its biggest draw actually lies below the southern peak: the wreck of a RAAF Avro Lincoln bomber that crashed on 9 April 1955 during a medical evacuation, which is the main objective for most walkers.

Routes

Lingkar Steamers–Superbus (multi-hari, Taman Nasional Main Range)

Berat — off-track lintas punggungan dan hutan hujan, untuk pendaki berpengalaman
Multi-hari (umumnya 2–3 hari)

A long loop combining the Mount Superbus summit with The Steamers formation and Main Range ridgelines, regarded as one of the most challenging multi-day walks near Brisbane. It is entirely off-track, crossing dense rainforest and open ridges, and demands self-reliant navigation, water planning, and solid bushwalking experience.

Pendekatan selatan: Spring Creek Road → Teviot Brook → Puncak Mount Superbus (pulang-pergi)

Berat / Kelas 4 — off-track tanpa jalur bertanda, navigasi menjadi tantangan utama
Sekitar 8–10 km pulang-pergi, naik-turun ~600 m (perkiraan ~3–4 jam total, tergantung navigasi)

The most common route: from Spring Creek Road onto Brett/Head Road, crossing Teviot Brook on a timber bridge, then climbing off-track through dense rainforest following a faint footpad and pink marking tape to the summit. The top is forest-enclosed with no views, marked by a small cairn; many walkers continue just below the southern peak to see the Avro Lincoln bomber wreck. GPS is strongly advised because the footpad is easily lost, and long pants help against gympie-gympie and lantana.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Mount Superbus are dominated by two themes: the difficulty of off-track navigation through dense rainforest with no formal trail, and the draw of the 1955 Avro Lincoln bomber wreck below the southern peak. Walkers repeatedly stress how easily the footpad is lost, the need for GPS, the hazards of gympie-gympie stinging trees and lantana, and the fact that the summit itself is forest-enclosed with no views. Some tackle it as a demanding day walk, others fold it into a multi-day Steamers–Superbus loop in Main Range National Park.
