Description

Mount Sunday is an isolated hill in the upper Rangitata River valley of inland Canterbury, on New Zealand's South Island. Its form — a glacially carved roche moutonnée — was chosen as the site of Edoras, capital of Rohan, in 'The Lord of the Rings' films, and it has since become a tourist attraction. Reaching it involves about 17 km of gravel road with a ford and stream crossings, then a short roughly 30-minute walk from the car park to the summit. The top offers sweeping views of the Southern Alps and the braided river plains — high-country scenery that draws many visitors even without a connection to the films. Because it sits on remote conservation land, walkers must watch river conditions and fast-changing alpine weather.

The Mount Sunday experience is almost always framed by its connection to Edoras in 'The Lord of the Rings'.
