Description

Mount Stirling (1,749 m) is a subalpine peak in the Victorian Alps, part of the Great Dividing Range in the Hume region of Victoria, about three hours' drive from Melbourne. Next to the Mount Buller ski resort, Stirling is instead known as a comparatively wild bushwalking and cross-country skiing area — without major ski lifts — making it popular for beginner-friendly day and overnight walks. Its signature route, the roughly 13–14 km Mt Stirling Summit Loop (grade 3, about 5 hours), starts at Telephone Box Junction and follows dirt roads through mountain ash and woollybutt forest past a string of historic huts — Bluff Spur Memorial Hut, GGS Hut, King Spur Hut and the Cricket Pitch Shelter — before a final 20-minute climb through snow gums and subalpine herbfields to the summit. From the top, 360-degree views take in the Australian Alps, including a clear outlook to Mount Buller opposite. In winter the whole area becomes a snow environment.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of Mount Stirling are dominated by the Summit Loop from Telephone Box Junction: a beginner-friendly 13–14 km route along dirt roads and mountain forest, calling at historic huts, then a final 20 minutes to the 360-degree summit. Many use it as a first overnight trip thanks to gentle gradients and scattered huts. Some take the longer Delatite River approach from Mirimbah, and in winter the area is popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
