Description

Mount Stanley is the highest massif of the Rwenzori Mountains on the Uganda–DR Congo border; its main summit, Margherita Peak (5,109 m), is the highest point of both countries and the third-highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Unlike those two, the Rwenzori are not volcanic but an uplifted block of crust, and although they sit almost on the equator the summits still carry glaciers and permanent snow — though this ice is shrinking fast. The route to Margherita passes through rainforest, giant-heather zones and the famously muddy Afro-alpine bogs before climbing onto glaciers; the summit day demands glacier travel and scrambling. The area is protected as Rwenzori Mountains National Park and can only be climbed through licensed operators with guides and porters.

Routes

Central Circuit (Rwenzori) ke Margherita Peak

Teknis (traverse gletser, tali tetap & scrambling di hari puncak; rawa/lumpur panjang di bawah)
7–9 hari (ekspedisi berpemandu 10–12 hari)

The classic route to Margherita Peak. From the Nyakalengija trailhead the path climbs from equatorial rainforest through giant-heather zones and Afro-alpine bogs, overnighting at the hut chain Nyabitaba → John Matte → Bujuku → Elena. From Elena Hut climbers cross the glaciated Stanley Plateau for the summit push to Margherita (5,109 m). Guides/porters and glacier equipment are mandatory.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Mount Stanley is usually part of a 7–9 day Rwenzori expedition along the Central Circuit, passing a chain of huts (Nyabitaba, John Matte, Bujuku, Elena) before a glacier traverse from Elena Hut across the Stanley Plateau to Margherita Peak (5,109 m). Climbers describe knee-deep bog and mud, surreal mossy forest, and a technical summit day on ice. The sources below include summit footage, a documentary, and real trek accounts.
