Description

Mount Sonder (about 1,380 m), known as Rwetyepme in Western Arrernte, is one of the highest peaks in the Northern Territory and an icon of the West MacDonnell Ranges (Tjoritja) in the heart of central Australia, roughly 150 km west of Alice Springs. Its long, double-humped silhouette resembles a reclining figure — hence its Arrernte name is often read as 'pregnant woman' — and the mountain is a sacred place for the Western Arrernte people. Mount Sonder marks the western end and the highest point of the Larapinta Trail, the roughly 223 km long-distance route that finishes (or begins) here as Section 12. The climb is an out-and-back day hike from the Redbank Gorge car park: it opens with a steep pull up the southern side of the range, then follows a rocky ridgeline that delivers sweeping views in every direction all the way to the summit. The most popular tradition is to climb in the dark — often setting off around 3 a.m. with a headlamp — to reach the top exactly at sunrise over the red ranges and desert plains below. Because there is no water along the route and daytime heat can be brutal, carrying plenty of water, sun protection and warm layers for the windy pre-dawn is essential.

Routes

Mount Sonder Sunrise Hike (pendakian matahari terbit)

Puncak Mount Sonder via Redbank Gorge (Larapinta Seksi 12)

Berat (tanjakan curam di awal + punggungan berbatu panjang, non-teknis)
±5,5–8 jam pulang-pergi (±15,8 km)

Climbing Experiences

Almost every account of Mount Sonder shares one theme: it is the demanding finish (or opening) of the Larapinta Trail, with Section 12 from Redbank Gorge to the summit as the highlight. Vlogs and trip reports consistently describe a pre-dawn start in the dark, a steep initial climb, then a long rocky ridge that culminates in a spectacular sunrise over the West MacDonnell Ranges. Hikers repeatedly stress the harshness of the desert climate — extreme daytime heat, zero water sources, and biting cold wind at the summit before dawn — making water management, a headlamp, and warm layers essential.
