Description

Mount Somers — Te Kiekie in Māori — is a 1,688 m rhyolite volcanic mountain at the foothills of the Southern Alps, part of Hakatere Conservation Park in Canterbury. It is best known for the Mount Somers Track, a popular two-day tramp that circles the mountain's northern side between the Sharplin Falls and Woolshed Creek car parks. The route offers rich variety: mountain beech forest, steep rocky ridges, tussock flats, rocky creek beds and views of snow-capped peaks, along with a long swing bridge. Two huts — Pinnacles and Woolshed Creek — provide bookable overnight stops. The Sharplin Falls to Pinnacles Hut leg is more challenging than most tramping tracks, while the Woolshed Creek side is more family-friendly. The true summit of Mount Somers is reached via the unmarked, harder Te Kiekie Route. The area can be very cold and snowy in winter, and streams can rise quickly after rain — so weather planning is key.

Routes

Mount Somers Track (Sharplin Falls ↔ Woolshed Creek)

Climbing Experiences

Climbers' experiences on Mount Somers are dominated by the Mount Somers Track — a two-day tramp linking Sharplin Falls and Woolshed Creek via Pinnacles Hut and Woolshed Creek Hut. Vlogs and blogs describe rich terrain variety: beech forest, steep rocky ridges, tussock flats, a long swing bridge and views of snowy peaks. Many highlight two options: the harder leg to Pinnacles, or the more family-friendly Woolshed Creek/Miners Track side. Recurring advice: book huts ahead, watch streams (especially Pony Stream) that rise quickly after rain, and prepare for cold and snow in winter.
