Description

Mount Sneffels (4,313 m / 14,153 ft) is the highest summit of the Sneffels Range in Colorado's San Juan Mountains and one of the state's most iconic fourteeners. Rising inside the Mount Sneffels Wilderness of Uncompahgre National Forest, about 11 km southwest of the town of Ouray, its sharp pyramidal summit is in fact the eroded remnant of ancient San Juan volcanism. The standard route climbs through Yankee Boy Basin to Lavender Col, then ascends steep talus to the 'V-Notch' and a final rocky Class 3 scramble to the top — short but demanding because of loose rock and altitude. The summit offers sweeping views over the Sneffels Range, Blue Lakes, and the jagged heart of the San Juans.

Routes

Rute Standar — Lavender Col & V-Notch (via Yankee Boy Basin)

Kelas 3 (scrambling batu lepas di kolar dan V-Notch)
8.50 km +850 m ~5–8 jam PP dari Yankee Boy Basin

The main and most popular route up Mount Sneffels. From the Yankee Boy Basin trailhead (reached by a rough road that often requires a high-clearance/4x4 vehicle from Ouray), the trail climbs through alpine wildflower meadows to Lavender Col, then ascends steep talus to the narrow 'V-Notch' and a final Class 3 scramble to the 4,313 m summit. It is short but demanding because of loose rock, crowds, and afternoon thunderstorms.

Southwest Ridge

Kelas 3 (lebih terekspos dan panjang daripada Lavender Col)
Hari penuh (lebih panjang dari rute standar)

A classic alternative that climbs Sneffels' southwest ridge — longer and more exposed than the standard route, with sustained scrambling over solid and loose volcanic rock. It appeals to climbers wanting a bigger challenge and quieter conditions, while remaining in the Class 3 range.

Climbing Experiences

Mount Sneffels is a favourite fourteener with a light alpine character: the approach through wildflower-filled Yankee Boy Basin, then up to Lavender Col and through the V-Notch with a Class 3 scramble over loose rock. Many climbers also take on the more demanding Southwest Ridge, or a winter/ski ascent that becomes full mountaineering. The clips below capture that range of experiences.
