Description
Mount Shuksan (2,783 m) is one of the most iconic and photographed mountains in the North Cascades of Washington State—rising just east of Mount Baker inside North Cascades National Park, Whatcom County. Unlike its volcanic neighbour, Shuksan is a metamorphic massif (Shuksan greenschist) cloaked in numerous glaciers—the Sulphide, White Salmon, Crystal, Curtis, Hanging, and Price. Its summit is a rocky 'summit pyramid' that must be climbed at the very end. Two main routes stand out: the Sulphide Glacier (Class 3–4)—the easiest and most popular, usually a 2-day trip with a glacier camp—and Fisher Chimneys (Class 4), a more demanding mix of rock scrambling and glacier crossings that joins the summit pyramid from the west. Both demand alpine skills, a rope, and glacier gear.

Routes
Fisher Chimneys (Kelas 4)
Kelas 4 (scramble batu + penyeberangan gletser)The second most popular and more technical route from the west: approach to the Fisher Chimneys—a Class 4 rock chimney system—then traverse the Upper Curtis & White Salmon Glaciers to Hell's Highway, joining the summit pyramid. More challenging and exposed than the Sulphide, suited to experienced alpine climbers.
Sulphide Glacier (Rute Normal — Kelas 3–4)
Kelas 3–4 (gletser + scramble piramida puncak)The easiest and most popular route on Shuksan. Approach via Shannon Ridge to a glacier camp on the Sulphide Glacier, then roped glacier travel up to the base of the 'summit pyramid'. The top is finished with a ~150 m Class 3–4 rock scramble (often roped). A North Cascades backcountry permit is required to camp (quota of 6 parties/day on the Sulphide).
Route Segments
- 1
Shannon Ridge TH → Kemah Sulphide Glacier
Trail hutan lalu punggung terbuka menuju tepi gletser; lokasi kemah kuota terbatas
- 2
Kemah → Dasar Summit Pyramid
Perjalanan gletser bertali, waspada crevasse; berangkat dini hari
- 3
Summit Pyramid → Puncak
Scramble batu Kelas 3–4 ±150 m, umumnya ditali; turun dengan rappel/downclimb
Climbing Experiences
Shuksan is climbed as a 1–2 day alpine trip via the Sulphide Glacier (easiest/most popular) or the more technical Fisher Chimneys. Creators highlight the long approach, roped glacier travel, and the rocky 'summit pyramid' at the end. Many call it one of the most memorable climbs in the North Cascades.
