Description
Mount Shasta (4,322 m) is a solitary stratovolcano at the southern end of the Cascade Range in northern California, and one of the most popular mountaineering peaks in the western United States. A dormant volcano, its flanks carry several glaciers. The most popular route, Avalanche Gulch, climbs from Bunny Flat via a camp at Helen Lake, then up steep snow past the Red Banks and Misery Hill to the summit—requiring crampons, ice axe and helmet, with most parties starting pre-dawn on firm snow.
