Description
Mount Satima (4,001 m), also known as Ol Donyo Lesatima — a Maasai name meaning 'mountain of the bull calf' — is the highest summit in the Aberdare Range and the third-highest peak in Kenya. It sits at the northern end of the Aberdares, looking west toward the Great Rift Valley and north across the Laikipia plains. The main attraction along the hiking trail is the 'Dragon's Teeth', dramatic volcanic spires of porphyritic quartz trachyte erupting from the moorland near 3,000 m. Above the Dragon's Teeth the route crosses wet moorland dotted with giant Lobelia keniensis and giant groundsel before reaching the grassy summit plateau. A day hike via Rhino Gate or Shamata Gate typically takes 6–7 hours return.
Routes
Dragon's Teeth via Rhino Gate (jalur utama)
Sedang–Berat; 16 km pp; tanah berawa dan berbatuThe main Satima route departing from Rhino Gate, climbing through bamboo forest before opening onto broad afroalpine moorland. After ~5 km, the dramatic 'Dragon's Teeth' volcanic rock formations appear—an iconic landmark before the summit. The trail continues through boggy tussock grass, Lobelia keniensis, and giant senecios to the summit cairn (4,001 m). Elephants and buffaloes are frequently seen. Entry through an official park gate with valid permits is required.

Jalur Shamata Gate (via Dragon's Teeth)
Sedang–berat (non-teknis; medan berawa; ketinggian di atas 4.000 m)A popular alternative via Shamata Gate (around 3,118 m). From this gate the trail climbs through bamboo forest and afro-alpine forest before entering the wet, boggy moorland. Midway lies the Dragon's Teeth — sharp 10–15 m volcanic rock spires that are the route's iconic landmark. The trail ends at the open 4,001 m summit with views toward the Great Rift Valley, Mount Kenya, and Lake Naivasha on clear days. A KWS armed ranger escort is mandatory due to elephant and buffalo in the lower forest zone.
Route Segments
- 1
Shamata Gate → Persimpangan utama
Zona hutan bambu dan afroalpin; wajib bersama ranger KWS bersenjata; kemungkinan perjumpaan gajah/kerbau
- 2
Persimpangan → Dragon's Teeth
Moorland berawa; sepatu waterproof sangat dianjurkan; formasi batuan vulkanik Dragon's Teeth menjadi penanda rute
- 3
Dragon's Teeth → Puncak (4.001 m)
Tanjakan lebih curam; medan terbuka; puncak menawarkan panorama 360° ke arah Great Rift Valley dan Gunung Kenya
Jalur Wandare (Mweiga Gate)
Sedang (jalur lebih panjang dari sisi selatan)An alternative via the Wandare Trail from Mweiga Gate on the southern side of the Aberdares. Longer than the Dragon's Teeth route, it passes through more diverse forest scenery in the lower section before opening onto the characteristic moorland. Less frequented than the Dragon's Teeth trail, offering a quieter experience.
SourceWandare Trail (jalur lebih pendek)
Sedang; ~10,5–12 km pp; lebih kering dari jalur RhinoA shorter and generally drier alternative via Wandare Gate compared to the Shamata/Rhino side. A 15 km drive into the park through bamboo forest is followed by a moorland walk up rolling hills to Ol Donyo Lesatima. The trail passes lobelia, senecios, and tussock grass with views toward Laikipia before reaching the summit. Less popular than the Dragon's Teeth route but quieter.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Hiking Mount Satima (Ol Donyo Lesatima) is a one-day affair, most commonly accessed via Rhino Gate or Shamata Gate along the Dragon's Teeth route. Hikers cross scrubland, boggy moorland, and dramatic volcanic rock spires before traversing the characteristic Aberdare moorland to the 4,001 m summit. Sudden mist is common and wildlife (elephant, buffalo) may be encountered on the lower slopes. The round trip typically takes 6–7 hours.
