Description

Mount Saramati (3,826 m) is Nagaland’s highest peak in the Naga Hills on the India–Myanmar border. Wikidata locates it at 25.74° N, 95.0375° E and lists both countries. The Indian approach starts at Thanamir, an apple-growing village in Kiphire district. First-person accounts describe forest and rhododendron trails, narrow ridges and steep rock before base camp; exposed terrain and remote logistics require preparation. The Gypsy Chiring’s seven-day itinerary includes road travel rather than seven walking days and describes a difficult night descent. Nagaland’s official portal states that foreign tourists require a PAP as verified in September 2026; older information mentioning only registration on arrival should not be relied upon. A May 2019 account records retreat in rain, fog and wind; reaching base camp does not guarantee a summit attempt.

The documented approach starts in Thanamir, reached through Pungro. The Gypsy Chiring account separates the walking into Thanamir–base camp, base camp–summit–base camp, and the return to Thanamir. The steep rock described by the author lies on the approach before base camp; the summit trail also crosses exposed slopes and cliff edges. On that trip, insufficient food led to a night descent, rain, navigation problems and an emergency bivouac: plan supplies and descent timing with a guide instead of treating that experience as a normal schedule.
