Description
Mount Sabyinyo is an extinct volcano in the Virunga chain, rising about 3,645 m at the meeting point of three countries — Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its name comes from a local word meaning roughly "old man's teeth," describing a summit so eroded over time that it forms several rocky towers. The climb is among the toughest in the Virunga area: hikers pass through bamboo and Hagenia–Hypericum forest, then ascend a series of very steep wooden ladders and narrow ridges to cross the first, second and finally the third peak, which marks the tri-border point. Because its flanks are so steep, the popular route starts from the Uganda side (Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, based in the town of Kisoro), while on the Rwandan side it lies within Volcanoes National Park, famed as mountain-gorilla habitat. Climbs must be accompanied by a guide and armed park rangers.

Routes
Sabyinyo Three Peaks Trail (via Mgahinga, Uganda)
SulitA roughly 14–15 km route from Mgahinga Gorilla NP (based in Kisoro) with about 1,300 m of gain, through bamboo and Hagenia–Hypericum forest, then steep wooden ladders to the first, second and tri-border third peak. Armed UWA guides/rangers are mandatory.

SulitA Sabyinyo ascent follows jagged, ladder-aided ridgelines. Because its faces are so steep, the summit is generally climbed from the Uganda side; in Rwanda the mountain lies within RDB-managed Volcanoes National Park.
