Description

Mount Rundle (Cree: Waskahigan Watchi) is an iconic 2,948 m mountain ridge stretching between the towns of Banff and Canmore in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Formed from tilted sedimentary rock, it shows a classic dip-slope profile: one gently forested side and one steep cliff face. It is named after Robert Terrill Rundle, a 19th-century Methodist missionary. Though not volcanic, Rundle is one of the most popular yet demanding scrambles in the Canadian Rockies: the route to the Main (West) Peak starts from the Spray valley near Banff, climbs through forest, then continues up slabs and scree to the summit gully. Rundle is often a visitor's first 'real' climb, but its central gully is dangerous and has claimed lives. Traversing the full chain of peaks is a technical mountaineering objective.

Routes

Crux Gully Tengah

Berat (terpapar, slab licin)
Bagian dari hari puncak

The crux of the normal route: a central gully that is easy low down but steepens into smooth, exposed slabs near the top — Rundle's most dangerous section, which has claimed lives. Careful footwork and good judgment are essential if the weather turns.

Scramble Puncak Utama (West/Main Peak)

Berat (difficult scramble)
18.00 km 1 hari (10–12 jam PP)

The normal and most popular route to the summit, starting from the Spray valley near Banff. A long forested climb leads onto the sedimentary dip-slope, ascending slabs and scree fields to the summit gully. Total gain is about 1,600 m. Requires snow-free conditions and an early start.

Traverse Punggungan Rundle (III, 5.5)

Sangat berat (teknis alpin)
Ekspedisi/pemanjatan penuh hari

Traversing the full chain of Rundle's peaks end to end — a technical climb graded III, 5.5 requiring rope, gear and alpine experience. For experienced climbers only, not a regular scramble.

Climbing Experiences

Hiker accounts of Mount Rundle center on the day-long scramble to the Main Peak from the Banff side. Recurring themes: a long forested approach, the transition onto rock slabs and a tiring scree field ('two steps up, five steps back'), and the crux central gully — smooth, exposed, and the most dangerous section demanding extra care. Many creators stress a very early start, fully snow-free conditions (generally late June onward), and the sweeping summit panorama over the Bow Valley, Banff and Canmore as the reward. Several call Rundle their first 'real' scramble and one of the toughest, longest days around Banff.
