Description

Mount Rufus (1,416 m) is an alpine peak at the southern end of Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania, within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It is climbed via a roughly 19 km circuit (about 7 hours, Grade 4) starting from the Lake St Clair (Cynthia Bay) area. The highlight is the summit panorama: in clear weather peaks are visible in every direction, including Mount Olympus. Because of its altitude and exposure, Mount Rufus is often subject to severe weather, so preparation and weather-watching are essential.

Routes

Lingkar Mount Rufus & Little Hugel (via Richea Valley & Shadow Lake)

Menengah — naik konsisten, sebagian punggungan terbuka; total tanjakan ~1.015 m
~25 km lingkar, sehari penuh

A longer loop variant (~25.5 km, ~1,015 m ascent) from Lake St Clair Lodge, usually clockwise: climb Mount Rufus (1,416 m) from the south, then traverse the ridge north to the neighbouring peak Little Hugel (1,274 m) via the Richea Valley — a valley famous for flowering Richea scoparia and giant pandani (the world's largest heath plant) — before descending back past Shadow Lake. It offers panoramas of Lake St Clair, Mount Olympus and Frenchmans Cap in clear weather; mixed forest, cool-temperate rainforest and open alpine moorland demand readiness for the weather.

Mount Rufus Circuit (dari Lake St Clair / Cynthia Bay)

Grade 4 — jalur panjang, kasar, dan curam
~7 jam (sirkuit sehari)

A ~19 km circuit starting from the Lake St Clair (Cynthia Bay) area. The track climbs through forest and alpine moorland to the ridge and summit of Mount Rufus (1,416 m), then descends to close the loop. The summit offers a wide panorama—in clear weather, mountains are visible in every direction, including Mount Olympus. Graded 4 (experience recommended) as it is long, rough and steep; weather at this altitude can be severe, so carry cold-weather gear and watch the forecast.

Climbing Experiences

Mount Rufus (1,416 m) in Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park is usually walked as a ~19 km circuit from the Lake St Clair (Cynthia Bay) area, a full day (~7 hours); some extend it over the neighbouring peak Little Hugel into a ~25 km loop with over 1,000 m of ascent. The track climbs from eucalypt forest through mossy, ferny cool-temperate rainforest, then opens onto subalpine moorland before a dolerite scramble to the summit. Recurring highlights in hikers' accounts: flowering Richea scoparia and giant pandani in the Richea Valley, alpine tarns such as Shadow Lake, panoramas to Lake St Clair, Mount Olympus, Frenchmans Cap and the Franklin River headwaters, fast-changing weather (snow possible even in summer), and no cell reception so maps are essential.
