Description
Mount Roraima (2,810 m) is a tepui—a sheer-walled table mountain typical of the Guiana Highlands—whose summit plateau marks the tripoint of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana. Its near-vertical cliffs and frequently cloud-wrapped top inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World" and are often linked in popular culture with the film "Up." Unlike most tepuis, which require technical cliff climbing, Roraima has a single natural non-technical line—"la rampa" (the ramp)—so it can be reached by trekking without ropes. The classic route departs from the Pemón village of Paraitepui inside Canaima National Park (Venezuela), crossing the Gran Sabana savanna over several days before ascending onto a quartz-strewn plateau full of strange rock formations, natural pools ("jacuzzis"), the Valley of Crystals, and highly endemic plant life. Because it is remote and wet, a licensed local guide is mandatory.

Climbing Experiences
Mount Roraima (2,810 m), the iconic tepui at the Venezuela–Brazil–Guyana tripoint. The classic 6–7 day trek departs from the Pemón village of Paraitepui, crosses the Gran Sabana savanna and rivers, then ascends "la rampa" onto a quartz-strewn plateau. Hikers highlight potentially flooded river crossings, mist and rain on top, natural pools ("jacuzzis"), the Valley of Crystals, La Ventana, and the prehistoric landscape that inspired "The Lost World."
