Information

Elevation
2.275 m
Country
Selandia Baru (NZ)
Location / Range
Pegunungan Alpen Selatan / Main Divide, Taman Nasional Arthur's Pass, perbatasan Canterbury–West Coast, Pulau Selatan
Mountain type
Puncak alpine non-vulkanik (batuan greywacke) di Pembagi Utama (Main Divide) Pegunungan Alpen Selatan, berpuncak tiga: Low Peak (~2.212 m), Middle Peak, dan High Peak (~2.275 m)
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
-42.9119, 171.5119
Difficulty
Mountaineering alpine.
Best Season
Akhir musim dingin hingga musim semi belahan bumi selatan (kira-kira Agustus–November) ketika Rome Ridge tertutup salju yang memadatkan batuan lepas; di musim panas/gugur punggungan menjadi batuan lapuk dan longgar. Cuaca Main Divide berubah sangat cepat sepanjang tahun
Permits & Rules

Description

Mount Rolleston is an alpine peak of about 2,275 m on the Main Divide of New Zealand's Southern Alps, within Arthur's Pass National Park in the South Island. Although it is not the highest mountain in the park (Mount Murchison holds that title), Rolleston is one of the best known and most sought-after summits because it is clearly visible from State Highway 73 crossing Arthur's Pass toward the West Coast, and because it can be climbed in a single day from Arthur's Pass village. The mountain carries three tops — Low Peak (~2,212 m), Middle Peak, and High Peak (~2,275 m) — linked by exposed ridgelines above the Crow and Goldney glaciers. It was named by surveyor Arthur Dudley Dobson in 1864 after William Rolleston, then Superintendent of Canterbury Province, and was first climbed in 1912 by H. Thomson and J. Gilligan. The most popular line is Rome Ridge, an elegant snow-and-rock arête rising from the Coral Track to the Low Peak; from there climbers continue over Middle Peak to the High Peak and usually descend via the Otira Slide, the fastest way off the mountain. Because its greywacke rock is weathered and loose, Rolleston is safest when under winter–spring snow cover.

Routes

Otira Face (Central / Direct)

Alpine — teknis, curam (jauh lebih sulit daripada Rome Ridge)
1 hari (menuntut)

The Otira Face, overlooking the Otira valley, offers a number of steep technical routes to the summit ridge, including the Central Direct line. It is an option for experienced climbers seeking more challenging alpine terrain; ascents are typically finished by descending via the Low Peak and the Otira Slide. It demands steep ice/snow skills, exposure management, and careful condition assessment.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Mount Rolleston revolve almost entirely around a single-day alpine climb via Rome Ridge from Arthur's Pass village — a snow-and-rock arête that many climbers call one of Canterbury's finest alpine day trips. Video creators and trip-report writers describe the approach up the Coral Track, negotiating 'the Gap', ascending the exposed arête above the Goldney Glacier to the Low Peak, then continuing to the High Peak before a fast descent via the Otira Slide. Recurring themes: the importance of snow cover binding the loose greywacke rock, crampon-and-ice-axe skills, and reading weather and snow conditions (some creators even document snowpack assessment). A smaller set of experiences target the much more technical, steep Otira Face.
