Description

Mount Roland is an iconic 1,234-metre mountain that rises abruptly above the farmland plains of the Kentish and Sheffield districts on Tasmania's north-west coast, making it one of the region's most recognisable landmarks. Although its shape suggests a volcano, its summit is actually formed of hard dolerite rock rather than by eruption. Climbing it is a demanding day walk: the track climbs steadily through tall forest before emerging onto an open summit plateau, with rocky sections and a little scrambling near the top. Two main approaches leave from the Gowrie Park side — the shorter but far steeper Face Track, and the longer, more gradual main track (a former 4WD management route) — while another route ascends from the Claude Road side. From the top, walkers are rewarded with 360-degree views taking in Cradle Mountain, the Great Western Tiers, and the coast and Bass Strait beyond. Weather on the exposed plateau can turn windy, misty and cold quickly, so warm layers and rain protection are essential even on clear mornings. For the community around Sheffield — the well-known 'town of murals' — Mount Roland is an inseparable backdrop.

Routes

Face Track (dari Gowrie Park)

Berat (tanjakan curam dan langsung menuju dataran puncak, sebagian berbatu dan perlu sedikit scrambling)
±5–6 jam pulang-pergi

The quickest but steepest approach to Mount Roland's summit, starting from the Gowrie Park side. The track climbs sharply through forest to the edge of the summit plateau, then follows the open plateau to the high point (1,234 m). Being steep and rocky, it demands good fitness and care on the descent.

Mount Roland Track / O'Neills Creek (dari Claude Road)

Berat (lebih panjang dan lebih landai daripada Face Track, tetapi tetap menuntut stamina)
±6–7 jam pulang-pergi

A longer, more gradual alternative to Mount Roland's summit plateau, generally accessed from the Claude Road / O'Neills Creek side. It ascends more steadily through forest before joining the route to the summit plateau. Suited to those wanting a more measured climb, though it remains a demanding day walk with fast-changing summit weather.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing Mount Roland consistently describe a challenging but hugely rewarding Tasmanian day walk. Recurring themes: a long, steady climb through tall forest, a windy open summit plateau, and 360-degree views from the top taking in Cradle Mountain, the Great Western Tiers and the coast. Many creators set out from Gowrie Park and stress the need for good fitness, an early start, and warm clothing because summit weather changes fast. All sources below are verified live.
