Description
Pourangahau / Mount Robert (1,421 m) is a mountain in the Tasman District of New Zealand's South Island, within Nelson Lakes National Park, rising above Lake Rotoiti and the village of St Arnaud. For many years its slopes formed part of landowner and politician John Kerr's Lake Station before being returned to the crown in the years after his death in 1898. The partly unsealed Mt Robert Road, west of St Arnaud, ends at a car park that is the start of several tracks into the park. The most popular outing is a roughly 9 km loop (about 5 hours): the Pinchgut Track zigzags steeply up the open face to near the summit, then follows the ridge to Bushline Hut before descending gently via Paddys Track, with views over Lake Rotoiti and St Arnaud throughout. From the same ridge branches the Robert Ridge Route, a far more serious poled alpine route toward Lake Angelus.

Routes
Mt Robert Circuit (Pinchgut Track → punggungan → Paddys Track)

SourceClimbing Experiences
Most accounts of Mount Robert centre on the ~9 km loop from the Mt Robert Road car park: grinding up the steep, exposed zigzags of the Pinchgut Track, following the ridge with its Lake Rotoiti panoramas, then descending via Paddys Track. Many rate it among the best day walks in Nelson Lakes. Others use the summit as the gateway to the far more exposed Robert Ridge Route toward Lake Angelus — a poled multi-hour or overnight alpine trip that demands settled weather and experience.
