Description
Mount Rintoul (1,731 m) is the highest point of the Te Araroa trail as it crosses the Richmond Ranges in Mount Richmond Forest Park, on New Zealand's South Island — and one of its most difficult sections. From the main ridge the route climbs blocky scree to Little Rintoul (1,643 m), drops about 250 m to a rocky saddle, then climbs steeply again to the Mount Rintoul summit. The Richmond Ranges demand advanced backcountry skills and several days' supplies, and are a major test for Te Araroa thru-hikers. The summit offers sweeping views over the wild Marlborough ranges.

Berat — pendekatan ke basis di bawah puncakRintoul Hut, just off the route, is a common base before or after crossing the Rintoul tops, breaking the hardest section into something more manageable. It is used both by Te Araroa thru-hikers and by trampers targeting Rintoul separately. River conditions and weather dictate timing.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Almost all documentation of Mount Rintoul comes from Te Araroa thru-hikers crossing the Richmond Ranges — the hardest section on the South Island. The videos and trip reports below show the scree climbs to Little Rintoul and Mount Rintoul, exposed ridgelines, loose scree descents, and the multi-day feel of pushing through the Marlborough ranges.
