2.335 m
Country
Kepulauan Solomon (SB)
Location / Range
Kwaio Mountains, central Guadalcanal Island, Solomon Islands

Volcanic?
Yes — volcano
Coordinates
-9.7035, 160.0620
Difficulty
Very hard — a multi-day expedition (3–4 days) through dense, muddy tropical rainforest; the trail is unmarked and can only be done with a local guide from the Gold Ridge area
Best Season
The relatively dry season (May–October); June–September is the most stable. Outside this period, high rainfall worsens the already slippery and muddy trail conditions
Permits & Rules
There is no formal permit system, but climbers must arrange a local guide from the Gold Ridge Mine area (±25 km from Honiara). Access passes through communal land, so coordination and customary contributions with the local community are strongly recommended
Hazards
Extreme remoteness with very limited emergency assistance; slippery clay trails and muddy roots in dense tropical forest; no trail markers; high risk of getting lost without a guide; rainfall that can increase suddenly; dangerous fauna including tropical insects; and a very physically draining climb due to the combination of tropical altitude and high humidity

Description

Mount Popomanaseu (2,335 m) is the highest peak in the Solomon Islands and the highest point anywhere in the insular Pacific — the Pacific region outside the island of New Guinea. Located in the Kwaio mountain range at the heart of Guadalcanal, it stands as a deeply eroded ancient volcanic remnant whose summit dome is frequently hidden in cloud. The summit is saddle-shaped — its name means 'two humps' in the local language — and on clear days offers views across almost all of Guadalcanal and to the distant Solomon Islands archipelago. The climb begins from the Gold Ridge Mine area about 25 km from Honiara, heading south-west through undisturbed primary rainforest. The main route passes through Nanala village before entering cloud forest at higher elevations, with a full 3–4 day round-trip journey. The trail is unmarked and involves slick clay, muddy roots, and occasional tall-grass clearings. The mountain receives very few visitors per year — only a handful of trekking parties — making it one of the least-visited national high points in the Pacific.

Routes

Jalur Gold Ridge → Weathercoast → Puncak (rute standar)

+2200 m ±4–5 hari pulang-pergi (termasuk hari aklimatisasi/transit)

The most commonly reported route to Popomanaseu begins at the Gold Ridge Mine area about 25 km east of Honiara, reached by 4WD from the capital. From the trailhead, hikers follow the cross-island foot highway used daily by Weathercoast communities — a community track, not a tourist trail. The first four hours cover more manageable terrain before conditions deteriorate into deep mud and progressively denser forest. Unique cloud forest begins around 1,500–1,800 m: trees grow noticeably stunted, moss in shades of brown and red grows feet deep, everything dripping with cloud moisture. The summit is a saddle plateau; on clear days nearly the entire Guadalcanal and the surrounding Solomon Islands network is visible. Local guides and porters from villages along the trek are an absolute, non-negotiable requirement and also the link to obtaining customary land access permissions.

Rute Ekspedisi Birdwatching / Penjelajahan Flora-Fauna

Rute Utama: Gold Ridge Mine → Nanala Village → Puncak

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing Mount Popomanaseu consistently describe a tough, wet, multi-day expedition to one of the Pacific's least-visited national highpoints. Almost all reports start from the Gold Ridge Mine area and pass through Nanala village before entering dense primary rainforest. Climbers highlight extremely slick clay trails, muddy roots, occasional tall grass obstructing progress, and thick cloud gripping the summit. A local guide is described as essential — without trail markings, the risk of getting lost is real. For those who reach the top, the quiet cloud-forest atmosphere and panorama (on clear days) over Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands archipelago deliver a reward matching the challenge.
