Description

Mount Owen (1,875 m) is the highest peak in Kahurangi National Park in the Tasman District of New Zealand's South Island, and part of the Marino Mountains. Its signature feature is a marble karst landscape: its flanks are riddled with caves, including New Zealand's longest cave system, Bulmer Cavern, which runs for tens of kilometres. The jagged marble plateau near the summit briefly featured in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring — the scene where the fellowship emerges from Moria was filmed on Mount Owen's slopes. The climb is usually approached via Granity Pass, generally a two-day tramp with an overnight at Granity Pass Hut, then a marked-less 'route' to the summit that demands navigation skill. On a clear day the summit views are spectacular.

Routes

Courthouse Flat → Granity Pass Hut → puncak (via Granity Pass)

Berat — track lalu route tanpa penanda
2 hari (trek + route puncak)

The standard and most common route to Mount Owen's summit. From Courthouse Flat, the track climbs (classified a 'tramping track' by DOC) to the 12-bunk Granity Pass Hut. From the hut, the way to the summit is classified as a 'route': no markers or snow poles, keeping to the east of Sentinel Hill and passing a saddle with small tarns. This section is dangerous in snow, mist or bad weather, so a map and navigation skills are essential. Access to the trailhead is via the Wangapeka Valley from Tapawera; the Dart River ford may be impassable after heavy rain.

Climbing Experiences

Mount Owen is generally climbed as a two-day tramp via Granity Pass — following the track from Courthouse Flat to Granity Pass Hut, then continuing on a marked-less 'route' across the marble karst landscape to the highest summit in Kahurangi National Park. The videos below document that journey: camping among marble tors, ridge traverses and summit-day accounts — conveying the distinctive karst terrain, the navigation demands, and the fast-changing South Island mountain weather.
