Description

Mount Owen (1,875 m) stands in the Marino Mountains of Tasman District and is the highest peak in Kahurangi National Park. Its marble karst contains fissures and shafts that snow can conceal, requiring independent navigation on the tops. From Courthouse Flat, DOC allows six hours for the 8.3 km northern track to Granity Pass Hut, followed by a separate seven-hour return summit trip. The harder southern approach via Sunrise Peak involves river crossings and no water supply after leaving the Owen River. Accounts from 2024 and 2026 describe turning back at ice or retracing misleading cairns; reaching the hut does not establish that the summit route is safe.

Courthouse Flat → Granity Pass Hut → Mount Owen

Advanced tramping track / expert route

6 jam ke hut + 7 jam PP hut–puncak; tambah waktu turun ke trailhead / 6 h to hut + 7 h hut–summit return; allow extra time to descend to trailhead

From Courthouse Flat take the spur or Blue Creek; they merge before the Staircase and creek-bed approach to the hut. DOC’s 8.3 km and six hours apply only to trailhead–hut. Continue east of Sentinel Hill and past tarns toward the summit; there are no track markers or snow poles, although cairns occur. Allow seven hours return from the hut. Mist and snow make navigation hazardous.

Expert route

7 jam satu arah / 7 h one way

The harder southern approach crosses farmland and fords the Owen River several times before climbing steeply to Sunrise Ridge. There is no water supply after leaving the river. Above the bushline cross tussock and scree to the ridge below Sunrise Peak, then continue north toward Mount Owen. DOC requires good visibility because there are no official markers; obtain landowner permission for camping or night driving.
