Difficulty
Permits & Rules
Tidak ada izin resmi khusus, tetapi memakai pemandu lokal sangat dianjurkan (bahkan hampir wajib) karena medan curam, batu lepas, dan jalur tak bertanda; sebagian lahan bersifat pribadi/adat
Hazards

Description

Mount Otemanu (Mont ʻOtemanu, 727 m) is the highest point and defining icon of Bora Bora, in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. Together with neighbouring Mount Pahia (661 m) it is the eroded remnant of an ancient shield volcano whose caldera collapsed roughly three million years ago, leaving sheer basalt walls that rise dramatically above Bora Bora's turquoise lagoon. Unlike most peaks, Otemanu's true vertical summit is effectively unclimbable — the walls are too steep and the rock too crumbly — and is almost never reached. What visitors actually do is a guided trek from the Vaitape side that climbs about 500 m over roughly 4 km to viewpoints on its flanks and to the Anau cave (Ana o Pea, a former royal burial site) around the 600 m mark. The upper section is a scramble over loose rock with fixed ropes, opening onto sweeping panoramas of the lagoon, the surrounding motu (coral islets) and Mount Pahia. Otemanu is one of the most recognisable mountain silhouettes on Earth, appearing in countless images of Bora Bora.

Routes

Punggungan Atas Otemanu (percobaan ahli, berpandu)

Berat/Ahli — terekspos, batu basalt lepas & rapuh, dinding hampir vertikal; puncak sejati praktis tak terdaki

A technical extension of the main trek toward Otemanu's high ridge/shoulder that experienced guided parties occasionally attempt. The terrain is near-vertical basalt walls and loose, crumbling rock that is extremely dangerous — the reason Otemanu's true vertical summit is almost never reached. Only for very experienced climbers with a guide, proper gear and sound risk judgement; many sources advise stopping at the viewpoints for safety.

Climbing Experiences

Accounts of climbing Mount Otemanu almost always stress one thing: the true vertical summit cannot be reached, so an 'Otemanu climb' is really a steep guided trek to viewpoints on the flanks and to the Anau cave (Ana o Pea). Hikers describe a mix of dirt trail, scrambling over loose volcanic rock, narrow exposed ridges, and an upper section on fixed ropes — often feeling more like climbing than walking. Typical time is about 5–6 hours round trip (roughly 2.5 hours up with a guide). Recurring themes: the terrain is far more demanding and dangerous than expected, a local guide is strongly advised, and the reward is the panorama of Bora Bora's turquoise lagoon, its ring of motu, and the dramatic basalt walls of Otemanu and Mount Pahia. Some older vlogs claim to 'reach the top', but what they attain is a high shoulder or ridge, not the sheer basalt pinnacle at the true summit.
