Description

Olympus — known locally as Chionistra, from the Greek word for "snow" — is the highest point of Cyprus at 1,952 m, standing in the Troodos Mountains of Limassol District. Unlike a volcano, the Troodos massif is built of ophiolite rock, an uplifted slice of ancient ocean crust that makes it one of the most famous geological sites in the world. The true summit is occupied by a military radar station and is closed to the public, but hikers enjoy the peak via two circular nature trails that loop its slopes: Artemis (~7 km, 2–3 h) and Atalante (~14 km, 4–5 h), both well-marked and shaded beneath black pine forest. In winter, snow often blankets the slopes and turns the area into the only ski destination on Cyprus — the very source of the name Chionistra.

Routes

Artemis Trail (jalur alam melingkar)

Mudah; melingkar ±7 km, landai & bertanda baik, cocok keluarga (lebih lambat & licin saat bersalju)
±2–3 jam

The most popular circular nature trail looping the Chionistra summit at about 1,850 m. It is ~7 km with minimal elevation change, making it easy and family-friendly. Starting from the parking area near the Cyprus Ski Club, it passes through black pine forest, two centuries-old trees, and offers ophiolite rock outcrops and sweeping views across Cyprus. In winter the trail can be snow-covered and slower.

Atalante Trail (jalur alam melingkar bawah)

Sedang; melingkar ±14 km, sejajar Artemis pada ketinggian sedikit lebih rendah, teduh & bertanda baik
±4–5 jam

A longer circular trail of about 14 km looping the slopes of Olympus parallel to Artemis but at a slightly lower elevation. Also starting near the Cyprus Ski Club, it is shaded beneath pines, well-marked, and offers several lookouts and small historical ruins hidden in the woods. Suited to hikers wanting a fuller loop around the highest peak of Cyprus.

Climbing Experiences

Enjoying the summit of Olympus/Chionistra (1,952 m), the highest point of Cyprus, is usually done via two circular nature trails that loop its slopes, since the true summit is occupied by a radar station and closed to the public. The Artemis Trail (~7 km, 2–3 h) is gentle and family-friendly, passing through black pine forest, centuries-old trees and ophiolite rock outcrops with sweeping island views. The Atalante Trail (~14 km, 4–5 h) is longer and runs parallel to Artemis at a slightly lower elevation. Both start from the parking area near the Cyprus Ski Club (~1,850 m). In winter, snow often blankets the slopes — the source of the name Chionistra — turning the area into the only ski destination on Cyprus.
