Elevation
1.933 m
Country
Selandia Baru (NZ)
Location / Range
Sealy Range, Taman Nasional Aoraki/Mount Cook, Pulau Selatan
Mountain type
Puncak batuan di Pegunungan Sealy (Sealy Range), taman nasional alpine — non-vulkanik
Volcanic?
No (non-volcanic)
Coordinates
-43.7256, 170.0645
Difficulty

Description

Mount Ollivier (1,933 m) is a peak in the Sealy Range of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park on New Zealand's South Island, about 2.5 km west of Mount Cook Village. It is widely known as Sir Edmund Hillary's first significant climb — the start of a career that culminated in the first ascent of Everest. Today it is reached via the Sealy Tarns Track and Mueller Hut Route from White Horse Hill: a steep ~1,000 m climb to the 28-bunk Mueller Hut, followed by a short ~30-minute rock scramble to the summit. The route delivers 360° views across the Hooker Valley toward Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Mount Sefton icefall. According to the Department of Conservation (DOC), it is moderate tramping in summer but demands full alpine skills (ice axe and crampons) in winter, with real avalanche danger on the Mueller slopes.

Routes

Mueller Hut Route (via Sealy Tarns) ke puncak Mount Ollivier

Menengah (tramping alpine, musim panas); menuntut keterampilan mountaineering di musim dingin
10.40 km ±4 jam naik (2 jam desa→Sealy Tarns, 2 jam Sealy Tarns→Mueller Hut) + ±30 menit scramble ke puncak; ±3 jam turun

The main and usual route to the Ollivier summit, starting from White Horse Hill / Mount Cook Village. It climbs the steep steps to Sealy Tarns, then follows a poled route across scree to the 28-bunk Mueller Hut, gaining roughly 1,000 m from the valley floor. From the hut the Ollivier summit is a short ~30-minute rock scramble. Per DOC it is a moderate tramping experience in summer, but in winter it requires full alpine skills (ice axe and crampons) with avalanche danger.

Climbing Experiences

Almost every account centres on the Sealy Tarns → Mueller Hut Route that tops out on Mount Ollivier. Recurring themes: a very steep climb — the thousands of 'Stairway to Heaven' steps to Sealy Tarns, then a poled route across scree to Mueller Hut — that is exhausting but rewarded with 360° views of Aoraki/Mount Cook, the Hooker Valley, and the Mount Sefton icefall. Many hikers stay overnight at Mueller Hut for sunset and sunrise before the short rock scramble to the Ollivier summit. Sources also stress the safety dimension: fast-changing alpine weather, avalanche danger in winter/spring, and the need for fitness and proper gear.
