Description

Mount Oku (Mont Oku; locally Kilum Mountain) is the largest volcano in the Oku Massif, part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line in the Western High Plateau of Cameroon's Northwest Region. At 3,011 metres it is the second-highest peak in mainland West/Central Africa after Mount Cameroon. This stratovolcano is cut by a large caldera and holds Lake Oku — a sacred crater lake at roughly 2,200 metres that is the only habitat of the critically endangered Lake Oku clawed frog (Xenopus longipes). Its slopes are cloaked in the Kilum-Ijim Forest, the largest Afromontane forest remnant in West Africa (around 20,000 hectares), home to endemic birds such as Bannerman's turaco and the banded wattle-eye. For the Oku people the area carries deep spiritual meaning: Lake Oku is sacred, so activities like swimming and fishing are forbidden. Summit climbs usually start from Elak-Oku village, where visitors arrange permits and a mandatory guide at the tourism office in the Fon's palace, then ascend over a full day through the bird-rich cloud forest. The more popular and gentler trek to Lake Oku passes through the edge of the Kilum-Ijim forest, offering the calm crater-lake landscape amid montane jungle.

Routes

Pendakian Puncak Mount Oku dari Elak-Oku

Menengah–berat (bagian curam, hutan awan, puncak 3.011 m)
Sehari penuh pulang-pergi (kerap ~8 jam)

The summit climb of Mount Oku (3,011 m) typically starts at Elak-Oku village, where visitors pay for permits and hire a mandatory local guide at the Fon's palace tourism office. The trail climbs through the bird-rich Kilum-Ijim forest with steep sections and needs a full day round trip. The November–March dry season is best as the forest trail stays firmer.

Trek ke Danau Oku (danau kawah)

Menengah (jalur hutan, sebagian curam dan kurang bertanda)
~4–6 jam berjalan kaki dari desa; ~1 jam dari tepi hutan ke bibir kawah

A trek to Lake Oku, the sacred crater lake at roughly 2,200 metres inside the Kilum-Ijim forest. From a village (e.g. Elak/Keyon) it is about 4–6 hours on foot — partly shortened by motorbike on dirt roads — or roughly one hour from the forest edge to the crater rim. A local guide is mandatory as paths are poorly marked and the site is sacred (swimming and fishing are prohibited).

Climbing Experiences

Visits to Mount Oku usually center on two goals: the 3,011 m summit and Lake Oku, the sacred crater lake inside the Kilum-Ijim Forest. Visitors describe arranging permits and a mandatory guide at the Fon's palace tourism office in Elak-Oku, travelling from Bamenda via Kumbo, then trekking through bird-rich cloud forest. The summit is a full-day round trip, while Lake Oku is about a 4–6 hour walk from the village (or ~1 hour from the forest edge to the crater rim). Much of the available footage centers on the beauty and sacred status of Lake Oku.
