Description
Nyiragongo (3,470 m) is an active stratovolcano in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo, famous for a summit crater holding one of the world's largest and most persistent lava lakes. The standard climb starts at the Kibati ranger post and takes about 5–6 hours through forest and old lava flows to the crater rim, where climbers overnight in basic cabins to watch the glowing lava at night before descending the next morning. Because the volcano is active and the region can be insecure, the route is tightly managed by park authorities with guides and rangers, and access may close during eruptions or unrest. Major eruptions occurred in 1977, 2002, and 2021. Its draw is not altitude but the rare, direct view of a living lava lake.

Climbing Experiences
Climbing Nyiragongo usually takes a 1-day ascent (~5–6 hours) from the Kibati post in Virunga National Park, an overnight in crater-rim cabins, then a descent the next morning. Hikers describe climbing across old lava flows, the cold night at altitude, the fog that often hides the crater, and—when clear—the red glow of the lava lake on the crater floor. The trek is escorted by guides and rangers because the volcano is active and the region can be insecure.
