Description
Mount Nkungwe (2,462 m) is the highest peak of the Mahale Mountains in Mahale Mountains National Park, western Tanzania, rising straight from the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The park is reached only by boat and is famed as one of the world’s best places for chimpanzee trekking — habituated wild chimpanzees live on its forested slopes. Climbing Nkungwe itself is a multi-day forest trek that ascends from lowland and bamboo forest, crossing the subsidiary peaks Mhensabantu and Humo, to a summit ridge with sweeping views over green forest, Lake Tanganyika and the Congolese highlands beyond. Because of its remoteness the climb is self-supported: hikers carry their own tent, sleeping gear and food, accompanied by a park guide or ranger.
