Description

Mount Nimba refers to a mountain range straddling the borders of Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and Liberia; its high point is Mont Richard-Molard (~1,752 m), which is also the highest peak of Côte d'Ivoire and the summit of the range. Unlike many African mountains, Nimba is not volcanic but an iron-rich quartzite/itabirite ridge rising above forest and savanna. Its slopes hold extraordinary biodiversity — including the live-bearing Nimba toad (Nimbaphrynoides) and tool-using chimpanzees — so the core was designated the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hike most commonly done by visitors starts from the mining town of Yekepa in Liberia: a day-long climb past the abandoned LAMCO iron-ore mine workings up to the ridge where the borders of Liberia, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire meet, with sweeping views over three countries' forests.

Routes

Bossou (Guinea) → Nimba Ridge → Mount Richard-Molard Summit (rute sisi Guinea)

Sedang–Sulit (trekking non-teknis tetapi logistik berat; hutan lebat, tidak ada jalur resmi, terpencil)
2–3 hari pulang-pergi dari Bossou; summit push ~5–7 jam dari kamp atas

Route from Bossou, a research village in Guinea famous for its stone-tool-using chimpanzee population. From Bossou, trekkers with a local guide enter the Strict Nature Reserve's lower forest (~600–800 m asl) inhabited by chimpanzees and Nimba's rich fauna. The ascent continues through increasingly dense montane forest before the open ridge begins around 1,200–1,400 m. On the ridge the terrain opens with views into three countries. The final summit push to the high point (1,752 m) crosses unique montane alpine grassland. A guide from Bossou or N'Zérékoré and permits from the reserve authority are essential.

Sedang; menanjak curam, panas & lembap, perlu pemandu
±1 hari (pulang-pergi)

The route most commonly done by visitors starts from the mining town of Yekepa in Liberia. This day hike climbs past the abandoned LAMCO iron-ore mine workings, then steeply up a montane-forest ridge to the point where the borders of Liberia, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire meet, with sweeping views across three countries. Because the core is a UNESCO World Heritage Strict Nature Reserve, the climb is done with a local guide.
