Description

Mount Ngungun (about 253 m) is one of the volcanic plugs of the Glass House Mountains in the Sunshine Coast hinterland of Queensland — the sixth tallest of the group. With a summit track of about 2.8 km return that is less steep than Beerwah or Tibrogargan, Ngungun is one of the area's most popular and beginner-friendly climbs and a favourite for watching the sunset. The trail climbs through bush and rock faces to an open summit with panoramas of the other Glass House peaks — including the silhouettes of Beerwah and Coonowrin (Crookneck) — and the Sunshine Coast plains. The Glass House Mountains were named by Captain James Cook in 1770 and hold deep cultural significance for the Jinibara and Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) peoples; in local storytelling Ngungun is known as the 'dingo' among the family of mountains. Some traditional owners have asked that these mountains not be climbed, so visitors are encouraged to respect that request and stay on the official track.

Hiker experiences of Mount Ngungun consistently describe it as a short, beginner-friendly climb in the Glass House Mountains — a roughly 2.8 km return track through bush and rock faces to an open summit with the silhouettes of Beerwah and Coonowrin in the distance. Ngungun is a favourite for sunset, with many vlogs highlighting how much easier it is than the other Glass House peaks while still delivering famous panoramas of the mountain family.
