Description

Mount Napak (locally Napak) is an extinct volcano in Napak District, Karamoja, northeastern Uganda, on the northern edge of the Bokora Game Reserve and bordering the Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve. It is a former alkaline volcano that erupted carbonatite-nephelinite material during the Early Miocene on the margin of the Great Rift Valley, its inner structures now exposed by erosion. Napak's volcanic ash and paleosols are richly fossil-bearing, including numerous early primate taxa, and the Miocene primate paleontological site was named an IUGS Geological Heritage Site in 2022. For hikers it is Karamoja's third-highest peak (operators cite ~2,520-2,538 m; Wikipedia gives a lower ~2,103 m estimate) and is often described as the region's toughest climb owing to its steep slopes and lush vegetation.

Climbing Experiences

Napak is the eroded remnant of an Early Miocene volcanic cone in the heart of Karamoja. Beyond its scientific value as one of the world's richest sources of early Miocene primate fossils (an IUGS Geological Heritage Site), it forms part of the 'Karamoja mountains' hiking circuit alongside Moroto, Kadam, and Morungole promoted by local operators such as Kara-Tunga. Hikes typically start from the mountain's base near Iriiri/Napak (about 1 hour's drive from Moroto, 2 hours from Soroti), climbing through fertile foothills home to the Bokora clan of the Karamojong, untouched forest, and up to panoramic views over the Karamoja plains and distant ranges. Napak is a demanding climb, with steep slopes and occasional scramble sections that may require a ~15 m rope.
