Description
Mount Muhabura (4,127 m), meaning 'guiding star' in Kinyarwanda, is the third-highest dormant stratovolcano in the Virunga mountain chain on the Rwanda–Uganda border. The summit holds a small crater lake and rewards climbers with sweeping views of the other Virunga peaks and Lake Mutanda. The mountain can be climbed from the Ugandan side via Mgahinga Gorilla National Park near Kisoro, or from the Rwandan side through Volcanoes National Park near Musanze. Less visited than its famous neighbours, Muhabura offers a quieter wilderness experience in one of Africa's most iconic highland ecosystems.
Routes
Jalur Rwanda – Volcanoes National Park (via Musanze)
BeratThe Rwanda-side route departs from Musanze (Ruhengeri) and is coordinated through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). It starts lower (~1,850 m a.s.l.) making it longer than the Ugandan approach. The trail passes through subsistence farm fields, montane forest, bamboo forest, and afroalpine moorland before reaching the same crater-lake summit. An RDB guide is mandatory; permit fee is USD 75 payable at the Musanze RDB office. Less frequently used than the Uganda route.
SourceJalur Uganda – Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (via Ntebeko)
Berat (kenaikan ~1.900 m dalam ~5 km; non-teknis tetapi sangat curam)The most-used route starts from the Ntebeko trailhead inside Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda (~2,227 m a.s.l.), after a mandatory guide briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. The trail passes through dense bamboo forest for roughly 2 hours before opening into afroalpine moorland of heather and ericaceous shrubs. Grade increases sharply on the final 2 km — nearly 2,000 m elevation gain in 5 km makes this one of the steepest single-day climbs in East Africa. The crater-lake summit at 4,127 m offers 360° views of the Virunga chain and Lake Mutanda.
