Description
Mount Mtelo — also known as Sekerr — is a 3,336 m mountain in West Pokot County in Kenya's north-western highlands, about 120 km north of Kitale town. It is the seventh-highest mountain in Kenya (after Mount Kenya, Elgon, the Aberdares, the High Cheranganis and Mount Kipipiri) and the highest point of the Sekerr range at the northern end of the Cherangany Hills. The climb is non-technical: typically a 1–3 day trek based at the Marich Pass Field Studies Centre or at hillside camps/eco-lodges, passing through the terraced fields of the Pokot, montane forest, a bamboo belt and open moorland, with sweeping views towards eastern Uganda and north-west Kenya on a clear day. The mountain is sacred to the Pokot people — oral tradition calls it the 'cradle' of the pastoral Pokot — and is a place of prayer and ritual. Its slopes hold notable wildlife such as black-and-white colobus monkeys, several turaco and sunbird species, and the rare lammergeier (bearded vulture).
Routes
Jalur Marich Pass — puncak Mtelo/Sekerr
Berat non-teknis — jarak ~9,8 km dari basis ke puncak melewati ladang, hutan, bambu, dan moorland; tanpa peralatan panjatThe classic route is based at the Marich Pass Field Studies Centre (or hillside camps/eco-lodges). From there the climb ascends gradually through the Pokot's terraced fields, montane forest, a bamboo belt and open moorland to the 3,336 m summit. No special equipment or training is required, but the trek is long and physically demanding, and a local guide is strongly advised. Many hikers overnight at a hillside camp to ease the summit day, enjoying wide views towards eastern Uganda and north-west Kenya in clear weather.
