Description
Mount Moroto is an ancient extinct volcano in Uganda's Karamoja region, rising to 3,083 m above the surrounding semi-arid plains of northeastern Uganda. It is the highest mountain in Karamoja and part of a chain of ancient volcanoes stretching south from Mount Elgon to Mount Morungole in the north. The summit comprises two main peaks: Sokodek Peak (3,082 m) and Imagit Peak (2,930 m). Culturally, the mountain is the ancestral homeland of the Tepeth (also known as So) people — one of Uganda's smallest ethnic groups — who still inhabit the slopes in traditional homesteads, practising subsistence farming and herbal medicine. The ascent passes through habitat hosting over 220 bird species, monkeys, and wild cats; from the summit, sweeping views extend across the Karamoja plains to the Kenyan border.
