Information
- Elevation
- 965 m
- Country
- Amerika Serikat (US)
- Location / Range
- Monadnock Region, Jaffrey, Cheshire County, New Hampshire — bagian selatan sistem Appalachia
- Mountain type
- Monadnock / inselberg — sisa batuan keras (kuarsit dan sekis) yang bertahan setelah lingkungannya tererosi
- Volcanic?
- No (non-volcanic)
- Coordinates
- 42.8608, -72.1081
- Difficulty
- Sedang tapi melelahkan. Jalur terpendek (White Dot) hanya sekitar 1,8 mil ke puncak, namun menanjak hampir 1.800 kaki (±550 m) dan sebagian besar berupa batu terbuka; beberapa ruas menuntut scrambling ringan dengan tangan. Waktu tempuh yang lazim disarankan 3–5 jam pulang-pergi.
- Best Season
- Bisa didaki sepanjang tahun. Musim gugur populer karena udara sejuk dan warna daun, tetapi daun yang jatuh membuat batu licin; musim panas paling ramai terutama akhir pekan; musim dingin jauh lebih sepi namun menuntut perlengkapan dan pengalaman tersendiri. Kabut tebal di puncak sering menutup panorama.
- Permits & Rules
- Hazards
Description
Mount Monadnock (965 m) stands alone in Jaffrey, southern New Hampshire, and that isolation is the source of its fame. No other peak of comparable height lies within about 48 km, so it rises roughly 600 m above the surrounding landscape and delivers a 360-degree panorama far out of proportion to its size. Its name even became a geological term: American geologists use "monadnock" for any isolated mountain left standing because its rock is harder than the terrain eroded away around it. Its summit is bare, and not entirely by nature. Fires set by early settlers in 1800 to clear pasture swept through the old red spruce stands on its flanks; between 1810 and 1820 local farmers burned it again, believing wolves were denning in the blowdowns. The fire burned for weeks, stripped the topsoil and left the rock above roughly 610 m exposed — as it remains today. Monadnock also carries literary weight: Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau wrote about it, and it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1987. It has long been cited as one of the most frequently climbed mountains in the world — a claim repeated by virtually every visitor guide, though hard numbers are difficult to verify. As a climb it is short but not easy. The main White Dot Trail leaves the park headquarters in Jaffrey, passes through hardwood forest, then turns into a succession of open rock pitches. Many hikers descend the gentler White Cross to make a loop of about four miles, while those seeking quiet take the Pumpelly Trail or the far longer approach from Gilson Pond. Because of its popularity, Monadnock State Park caps daily parking reservations — arriving unbooked on a busy-season weekend risks finding no space at all.

Routes
Lingkar White Dot naik – White Cross turun
Berat untuk jarak pendek; turunan berbatu yang licinThe most popular combination: up the steeper White Dot, down the gentler White Cross, making a loop of about four miles with 1,798 ft of gain. Reckon on 3–4 hours; it is still rated strenuous despite its length. Because of its popularity the park caps daily reservations at around 225, and on busy days hikers pass hundreds of others. Recurring advice: carry two litres of water, use trekking poles for the rocky descent, dress in layers, take the descent slowly to protect ankles, and never rearrange the cairns used for navigation. Autumn is beautiful but fallen leaves make the rock slick; winter is far quieter.

Kelas 2 — beberapa ruas scrambling termasuk satu dihedral berkemiringan rendahAn alternative for anyone wanting to escape the crowds on the main trails. Up the White Dot, across via Cascade Link to the Pumpelly, then down the Red Dot — 4.3 miles with 1,800 ft of gain. A July 2023 trip report rates it Class 2 with several scrambling sections, including built stone stairs and one low-angle dihedral. The wide lower section is dull; the terrain becomes far more interesting with height, and the open bedrock above is rewarding even when fog closes the view. Wet rock demands extra care. The Red Dot descent is reported as feeling much more intimate and far quieter than the White Dot–White Cross loop.
SourceWhite Dot Trail (jalur tercepat ke puncak)
Sedang–berat; curam, berbatu, sebagian scrambling kelas 2The most direct and busiest route, starting from the Monadnock State Park headquarters in Jaffrey. About 1.8 miles to the summit with close to 1,800 ft (±550 m) of gain. The lower section runs through hardwood forest over roots and rock before turning into a series of open granite slabs; several ledges need hands for balance though nothing is technical. The final stretch is almost free of vegetation and badly exposed to wind, especially on the south-facing approach. Hikers advise allowing 3–5 hours despite the short distance, and returning the same way if speed matters. Daily parking reservations are strongly recommended; the quota often sells out on weekends from April to November.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Accounts of Monadnock converge on the same three points: the hike is short, the climb is relentless, and the summit is crowded. The White Dot Trail rises about 1.8 miles with nearly 1,800 ft (±550 m) of gain, and virtually every source advises allowing 3–5 hours round trip despite the modest numbers. The lower section is hardwood forest over roots and rock; higher up it becomes open slabs with several Class 2 scrambling sections needing hands, including built stone stairs and one low-angle dihedral. The usual pattern is up the steeper White Dot and down the gentler White Cross — a loop of roughly 4 to 5.2 miles. The second consensus: the rock is slippery. Hikers report slips on wet stone, and autumn leaf fall makes it worse; trekking poles and a slow descent come up repeatedly. Parking reservations are a constant theme too — the park takes only a limited number per day and hikers stress booking well ahead, especially on fall weekends. As for the view, the lucky report the White Mountains, Vermont's Green Mountains and even the Boston skyline; the unlucky get thick fog and nothing at all. Those seeking quiet take the Pumpelly or Red Dot trails and describe a far calmer experience than the main route, which can carry hundreds of people in a single day.
