Description

Mount Moco (Morro do Môco, ~2,620 m) is the highest mountain in Angola, rising on the Central Highlands of Huambo Province about 70 km west of Huambo city. Its summit gives sweeping views over Angola's rolling highlands and shelters a rare semi-alpine environment in the middle of tropical Africa — grassland dotted with relic afromontane forest patches, protected as an Important Bird Area with hundreds of recorded species. In 2014 it was named one of Angola's 'seven wonders'. Climbs usually start from Kanjonde village as the gateway: a steep ascent up red-dirt paths and grassland, roughly 2.5–3 hours to the top. Permission is obtained from the Soba (chief) of Kanjonde. The dry season (May–September) is best; nights can drop to 5–10°C.

Routes

Jalur Kanjonde ke puncak

Sedang
~2,5–3 jam naik (PP setengah hari)

The standard route from Kanjonde village as gateway: a steep climb up red-dirt paths and grassland, crossing a small perennial stream, roughly 2.5–3 hours to the 2,620 m summit. Requires the Soba of Kanjonde's permission (~5,000 kwanza) and ideally a village guide. Best in the dry season.

Puncak + petak hutan afromontane & Monte Loizunga

Sedang
1 hari (variasi)

A nature-focused variation: combine the summit climb with visits to relic afromontane forest patches (endemic-bird habitat, an Important Bird Area) and views toward nearby Monte Loizunga. Needs extra time and a local guide.
