Description
Mount Mitchell (2,037 m) is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest point in mainland North America east of the Mississippi River. It rises in the Black Mountains subrange of Yancey County, North Carolina, about 31 km northeast of Asheville, protected within Mount Mitchell State Park and surrounded by Pisgah National Forest. Its summit carries a subalpine Fraser fir forest and an observation platform. The mountain is not volcanic—it was formed by the orogenic uplift of ancient Appalachian metamorphic rock rather than volcanic activity. It is named for Elisha Mitchell, a University of North Carolina professor who measured its height in the 1830s and died in the range in 1857. The summit is reachable by driving the Blue Ridge Parkway plus a short walk, but strenuous hiking routes such as the Mount Mitchell Trail and the Black Mountain Crest Trail also lead to the top.

Black Mountain Crest Trail (Deep Gap)
BeratRugged ridge trail heading north from the picnic area over Mount Craig (the second-highest Appalachian peak) and through Deep Gap into Pisgah National Forest—rocky, remote terrain for experienced hikers.
SourceSummit Trail

SourceClimbing Experiences
Mount Mitchell (2,037 m), the roof of the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina. Many visitors reach the top by driving to the summit parking area and walking the short paved Summit Trail to the observation platform. Hikers seeking a challenge take the Mount Mitchell Trail (~19 km round trip from Black Mountain Campground with roughly 1,100 m of climbing) or the Black Mountain Crest Trail along the ridge over Mount Craig. Trip reports emphasize rapidly changing weather, fog and cold even in summer, the distinctive Fraser fir forest, and sweeping Blue Ridge panoramas from the summit.
