Description
Mount Mikeno is an extinct volcano rising to 4,437 m in the Virunga Mountains, lying entirely within Virunga National Park in eastern DR Congo. It is the second-highest peak of the Virunga massif after Karisimbi and one of the highest mountains in Africa. Its name is said to mean "poor" or "barren," a reference to its harsh, steep, uninhabitable slopes — a reputation that has earned it the label of the hardest of the Virunga chain to climb. Mikeno's lower slopes are one of the last strongholds of the endangered mountain gorilla, making the area a landmark of conservation history: the naturalist Carl Akeley died while climbing it in 1926 and was buried in the Kabara meadow on its flank; the zoologist George Schaller carried out pioneering mountain-gorilla studies here in 1959; and Dian Fossey set up her first research camp at Kabara before moving to the Rwandan side because of conflict. To this day, ascents to Mikeno's summit are extremely rare and frequently suspended because of insecurity; official visits are mostly gorilla tracking and volcano packages run by the park from the Bukima ranger post. This Congolese side is distinct from the approach via Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park.

Routes
Bukima – Kabara – Puncak Mikeno (sisi Virunga NP, DR Kongo)
Sangat sulit; lereng curam & terpapar, dianggap tersulit di antara massif Virunga; wajib pendaki berpengalaman + ranger bersenjataThe standard route to Mikeno's summit (4,437 m) starts from the Bukima patrol post in Virunga National Park, climbing about 4 hours to the Kabara meadow/camp (site of Carl Akeley's 1926 grave), then about 4 more hours up steep slopes to the top. Ascents are very rare and frequently restricted or closed because of the security situation in eastern DR Congo.

Access and permits are managed officially by the park; this Congolese side is distinct from the approach via Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Mikeno's summit (4,437 m) is very rarely climbed: its slopes are steep and exposed, and access to eastern DR Congo is often closed for security reasons. As a result, experience documentation is mostly official Virunga National Park packages (gorilla tracking + volcano climb) from the Bukima ranger post, expeditions/vlogs in the Virunga massif, and journalism about the area and mountain gorillas in the Mikeno sector. The sources below are curated to stay relevant to Mikeno and its slopes/area, not other peaks.
