Description

Mount Manaia (about 420 m) is the most striking landmark on the Whangārei Heads peninsula in Northland, roughly 30 km southeast of Whangārei on New Zealand's North Island. Its jagged rock pinnacles — the remnant of an ancient volcanic plug — rise dramatically above the Whangārei Harbour and make it one of DOC's best-known Northland short walks. The track is short but demanding: more than a thousand steps climb through lush native bush before ending at a boardwalk and viewing platform beneath the pinnacles, with a 360-degree panorama over the harbour, Bream Head, and offshore islands. The mountain is deeply significant to Māori: legend holds that the pinnacles are the petrified figures of the chief Manaia and his family, so the summit is honoured as a sacred (tapu) place and visitors are asked not to climb beyond the platform.

Routes

Mount Manaia Track

Climbing Experiences

Hikers consistently describe Mount Manaia as a short but sharply climbing 'short walk' — over a thousand steps through native bush to a viewing platform beneath the rock pinnacles, with sweeping views over Whangārei Harbour and Bream Head. Many highlight the well-maintained track, suitable even for families with children, and the Māori significance of the pinnacles, said to be the petrified figures of the chief Manaia and his family. DOC's official page confirms its status as one of Northland's premier short walks.
