Description

Mount Luxmore (official dual name Ō-te-horua-a-Te-Puhituia / Mount Luxmore) is a 1,472-metre peak in Fiordland National Park in the Southland region of New Zealand's South Island, rising above the western shore of Lake Te Anau. It is the high point and most popular summit side-trip on the Kepler Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, tackled either as part of a multi-day tramp or as a long return day hike from the Kepler car park near Te Anau. The route climbs through beech forest before emerging onto exposed alpine tussock ridgelines, passing Luxmore Hut, a 54-bunk Great Walk hut at about 1,085 m with a broad deck panorama over the Kepler Mountains and Lake Te Anau. From the hut a marked track crosses the open tops to the summit, where the final section becomes loose rock and scree, rewarding walkers with a classic Fiordland panorama of jagged ranges and the lake far below. Because most of the upper track sits above the treeline, the mountain is highly exposed to fast-changing, cold and wet Fiordland weather, with snow and ice possible outside the main season. It was named by surveyor James McKerrow after Philip Bouverie Luxmoore of Timaru.

Routes

Pendakian sehari: Kepler Track Carpark → Luxmore Hut → Puncak (pulang-pergi)

Berat — panjang dan menuntut stamina, bagian puncak curam di batuan lepas
27.00 km ±7–9 jam PP (menuju puncak)

The most common day-hike route: from the Kepler Track car park on the Lake Te Anau shore, the Great Walk track climbs through beech forest before emerging onto tussock tops and reaching Luxmore Hut (~1,085 m, about 13.5 km / 3–4 hours one way). From the hut a marked track continues to the Mount Luxmore summit (1,472 m) across open ridgeline with a loose-rock final section. Many walkers also detour into the nearby Luxmore Cave (torch required). Return to the summit is roughly 27 km with about 1,200 m of climbing.

Climbing Experiences

Experiences on Mount Luxmore fall into two patterns: a long return day hike (about 27–28 km to the summit via Luxmore Hut and Luxmore Cave) and an overnight stay at Luxmore Hut as part of the Kepler Track. Vlogs and trip reports repeatedly highlight the dramatic shift from mossy beech forest to open alpine tussock ridgelines, the broad Lake Te Anau panorama from the hut deck, and the fast-changing, highly exposed Fiordland weather on the summit tops. Many hikers stress an early start, carrying warm layers and rain gear, and bringing a torch to explore the nearby Luxmore Cave.
