Description

Mount Loura (about 1,573 m) is both the highest and the northernmost point of the Fouta Djallon highlands in northern Guinea, some 7 km from the town of Mali-ville. Part of the Massif du Tamgué, it rises in steep cliffs on three sides to a summit of bare rock slabs. Its fame rests on 'La Dame de Mali' (Néné Foutah) — a natural rock silhouette on the eastern flank that resembles the face and reclining figure of a woman; this pareidolia formation is an icon of Fouta Djallon tourism and carries several local legends. From the top the view opens far into Senegal and Mali, and at night the lights of towns across the border are said to be visible. A visit is usually a day trip from Mali-ville: driving (ideally by 4x4) toward Donkhole-Loura village, then walking to the viewpoint. Loura is often combined with other Fouta Djallon sights such as waterfalls and the Madina Kouta caves.
