Description

Mount Loolmalasin (also spelled Lolmalasin) is the third-highest mountain in Tanzania, with a summit of about 3,682 m — behind only Kilimanjaro and Meru. It rises on the eastern side of the Ngorongoro Crater, between Olmoti and Empakaai, as one of the extinct volcanic cones of the Crater Highlands complex inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Its last eruption is thought to date to the Pleistocene, and the Embulbul Depression stretches among the surrounding peaks. The climb is far quieter than Kilimanjaro: the route pushes through grassland and thickening scrub to a rocky summit moorland, and is almost always done from the village of Nainokanoka accompanied by a Maasai guide and a park ranger because wildlife roams the area. From the top the view opens across the whole highland — from the active Ol Doinyo Lengai to the silhouette of Kilimanjaro on a clear day. Loolmalasin is more often walked as part of a multi-day Crater Highlands trek (Olmoti–Empakaai–Loolmalasin) than as a stand-alone summit.

Routes

Pendakian puncak dari Nainokanoka / Bulati (sisi timur Kawah Ngorongoro)

Menengah; non-teknis, wajib pemandu/penjaga bersenjata karena satwa liar
1 hari (~5–6 jam naik; ~12–13 km; tanjakan ±1.140 m)

The summit route up Loolmalasin (3,682 m) from around the village of Nainokanoka/Bulati (~2,580 m) on the eastern side of the Ngorongoro Crater. The trail pushes through grassland and thickening scrub to a rocky summit moorland, with views across the whole highland to Ol Doinyo Lengai and Kilimanjaro on a clear day. Because it lies in the wildlife-inhabited Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the climb must be accompanied by a Maasai guide and a park ranger.

Trek Dataran Tinggi Kawah Ngorongoro (Nainokanoka–Olmoti–Loolmalasin–Empakaai–Danau Natron)

Berat; butuh kebugaran tinggi, berkemah, didampingi penjaga
7–9 hari

A walking trek across the Ngorongoro Highlands following Maasai cattle trails from the village of Nainokanoka past the volcanoes Olmoti, Empakaai, Loolmalasin, and Losirua, often ending at Lake Natron or Ol Doinyo Lengai. Loolmalasin is usually folded in as a summit or waypoint of this chain, done with camping and a ranger escort because of wildlife.

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Loolmalasin (3,682 m) — Tanzania's third-highest mountain — is usually done from the village of Nainokanoka/Bulati on the eastern side of the Ngorongoro Crater, accompanied by a Maasai guide and a park ranger because of wildlife. The summit is rarely a stand-alone goal; more often it is folded into a multi-day Crater Highlands walking trek (Olmoti–Empakaai–Loolmalasin). The sources below include one detailed summit trip report, a Loolmalasin-specific video, and documentation of Ngorongoro Highlands treks that pass its foot.
