Description

Mount Longido (2,637 m) is a rugged massif of ancient rock rising in isolation above the savanna of Longido District in Tanzania's Arusha Region, just a few kilometres from the Namanga border with Kenya. It is a sacred mountain of the Maasai people and is protected within the Mount Longido Forest Reserve. Though overshadowed by its taller neighbours Kilimanjaro and Meru, Longido offers a genuinely demanding climb: roughly 1,300 m of elevation gain from Longido town, a relentless steep ascent through dense forest, strong sun exposure with no water on the route, and a short bolted scramble (via-ferrata-style metal footholds) just below the summit. On a clear day the top yields sweeping views of Kilimanjaro and Meru, with the plains of Tanzania on one side and Kenya on the other. The hike is led by Maasai warrior guides and can be done as one long day from Longido town or as a two-day trek camping on the slopes. Because of its steep profile, Longido is often used as an acclimatization hike before attempting Kilimanjaro.

Routes

Rute dua hari (via sisi belakang; berkemah di lereng)

Berat; sama menantangnya namun terbagi dua hari dengan malam di kemah
2 hari (kemah bermalam di lereng; summit hari kedua, turun ke kota Longido)

A recommended two-day variant for those who want to take Longido more slowly and experience Maasai culture. Day 1: travel from Arusha to the Longido area, an easy walk in the lower savanna bush with a guide (sometimes spotting wildlife such as gerenuk, lesser kudu, klipspringer, giraffe and zebra), then climb to a camp on the slopes to spend the night under the stars. Day 2: an early start through dense forest, passing a local viewpoint, reaching the summit for views of the northern Tanzanian mountains, then descending to Longido town. Led by Maasai warrior guides throughout.

Climbing Experiences

Climbers describe Mount Longido as tougher than expected: a relentless steep ascent through dense forest, intense heat, and no water on the route, capped by a short bolted scramble (via-ferrata-style footholds) before the 2,637 m summit. Nearly every account highlights the views of Kilimanjaro and Meru from the top, the role of the Maasai warrior guides, and the choice of a single long day from Longido town or a two-day trek camping on the slopes—often used as an acclimatization outing before Kilimanjaro.
