Description
Mount Liamuiga (1,156 m) is the highest point of the island of Saint Kitts and of the nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis — a dormant stratovolcano once known by the colonial name 'Mount Misery' before it was renamed with its original Kalinago name meaning 'fertile land'. Its summit is crowned by a roughly one-kilometre-wide forested crater with a small crater lake at the bottom. The popular trail starts around the Belmont Estate on the northwest slopes, climbing through lush, steep and often muddy tropical rainforest to the crater rim; experienced hikers sometimes descend the crater wall with ropes. The hike is usually done with a local guide and takes about 4–5 hours round trip, making it one of the eastern Caribbean's most iconic land adventures.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Hiking Mount Liamuiga is a classic Caribbean rainforest adventure: from the Belmont Estate area on Saint Kitts' northwest slopes, the trail climbs steep and muddy through dense jungle to the rim of a nearly one-kilometre-wide crater. Most hikers go with a local guide, take about 4–5 hours round trip, and some experienced parties rope down into the crater. Experience reports highlight slippery mud, roots and rocks, summit mist, and the lush jungle atmosphere.
