Description

Mount Lamlam (about 406 m / 1,332 ft) is the highest point of the island of Guam, rising on the island's southern ridge near the villages of Agat and Umatac. Its name means 'lightning' in Chamoru. The peak is famous for a striking geographic claim: measured from the floor of the nearby Mariana Trench to its summit, the total change in elevation is said to be the greatest on Earth over such a short horizontal distance — earning it the informal title of 'tallest mountain in the world' when reckoned from the sea floor. The hike itself is short but characterful: a climb from the cross-island road up switchbacks with coastal views, then scrubby, sword-grass slopes to a rocky summit. Along the ridge toward the secondary peak of Mount Jumullong Manglo stand large crosses that local Catholics carry up each year in a Good Friday pilgrimage. With little shade and sharp sword grass, hikers are advised to wear covering clothes, carry plenty of water, and set out on a clear morning.

Routes

Jalur utama dari Cross Island Road (Agat–Umatac)

Sedang — tanjakan awal curam, punggungan rumput pedang, scramble batu pendek dekat puncak
±1,5–2 jam pulang-pergi; ±4,5–4,8 km, kenaikan ±260 m

Jalur klasik menuju puncak Mount Lamlam dari jalan lintas-pulau (Route 5) di sisi barat daya Guam. Trailhead ditandai papan hijau; jalur menanjak lewat switchback berpemandangan pesisir, melewati gua dengan altar kecil, lalu punggungan berumput menuju puncak berbatu. Bawa air cukup, tabir surya, dan pakaian tertutup untuk melindungi dari rumput pedang.

Perpanjangan ke Mount Jumullong Manglo (punggungan salib)

Sedang — lanjutan punggungan terbuka

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Mount Lamlam is well documented in vlogs and hiking guides: a short trail from the cross-island road to Guam's highest point, often combined with its neighbour Mount Jumullong Manglo whose ridge is lined with crosses. Accounts highlight sweeping coastal views, the 'tallest mountain on Earth from the Mariana Trench floor' claim, sharp sword grass, and heat with little shade. All sources below are verified live.
