Description

Mount Lamington (about 1,680 m) is an andesitic stratovolcano in Oro Province, Papua New Guinea, rising above the Popondetta coastal plain on the northern side of the Owen Stanley Range. Its densely forested peak was not even recognised as a volcano until its devastating 1951 eruption. Activity began around 18 January 1951 and culminated on 21 January 1951, when a giant eruption column collapsed and unleashed pyroclastic flows that killed about 3,000 people (a figure often cited as 2,942) and left more than 5,000 homeless—the deadliest volcanic disaster in Papua New Guinea's history, when the territory was under Australian administration. Its summit complex comprises lava domes and crater remnants above a base of volcaniclastic deposits dissected by radial valleys, with a broad 'avalanche valley' extending north from the breached crater. The mountain is named after the 2nd Baron Lamington, Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901. The monitoring work of volcanologist G.A.M. (Tony) Taylor during the 1951 crisis was later recognised with the George Cross. The last recorded eruption was in January 1956; the volcano remains classified as active.

Mount Lamington rises above the Popondetta coastal plain in Oro Province. There is no established tourist climbing route; any field visit is remote, crossing steep tropical forest and radial valleys, and needs customary/local permission and a guide. Because the volcano remains active, safety depends on its volcanic status. The summit complex consists of lava domes and crater remnants with a broad 'avalanche valley' extending north from the breached crater.
