Description
Mount Kumotori (雲取山, 2,017 m) is the highest point in Tokyo Metropolis, standing at the meeting of the Tokyo, Saitama and Yamanashi prefectural borders on Honshu. It separates the Okutama and Okuchichibu mountain ranges and marks the end of the Ishione ridge — Tokyo's highest ridgeline, which begins near JR Oku-Tama Station. Despite lying within the metropolitan area, its remote setting among a cluster of peaks makes access relatively long. As one of the "100 Famous Japanese Mountains" (Nihon Hyakumeizan), Kumotori is a hugely popular weekend hike from Tokyo — usually via the Kamosawa (鴨沢) trailhead near Lake Okutama, passing Nanatsuishiyama to the summit, with the Kumotori-sanso hut near the top. From the broad summit ridge, hikers enjoy wide views out to Mount Fuji on clear days.

SourceClimbing Experiences
Climbing Mount Kumotori (2,017 m), Tokyo's highest point, is almost always done via the Kamosawa (鴨沢) trail near Lake Okutama — a long roughly 20–23 km round trip passing Nanatsuishiyama to the summit. Hikers' accounts stress the same themes: a distance and duration that demand stamina (many choose to overnight at the Kumotori-sanso hut or camp at Gojunin-daira rather than day-hike), a broad summit ridge with wide views out to Mount Fuji, and terrain that changes sharply with the seasons — fresh green in late spring, golden larch foliage in October–November, and sub-zero winter snow requiring crampons. The alternative route from Mitsumine Shrine (三峯神社) on the Saitama side is often used for a traverse.
