Description
Mount Kulal is a deeply eroded extinct shield volcano rising east of Lake Turkana in Marsabit County, northern Kenya. A vast gorge, Gof Bongole, cuts almost through the massif, and its cool, moist summit supports an isolated cloud forest that contrasts sharply with the surrounding desert. Designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1978, the mountain harbours endemic wildlife such as the Kulal white-eye bird and the Mount Kulal chameleon. Villages including Gatab, Arapal and South Horr sit on its slopes, with the lakeshore town of Loiyangalani about 50 km to the west. Its elevation is recorded at about 2,285 m (Wikipedia; Wikidata gives 2,380 m).
Routes
Gatab / Arapal ke Puncak (pendakian dari desa atas)
Sedang, non-teknis, tetapi terpencilThe practical way up Mount Kulal starts from the higher villages of Gatab or Arapal, reached either on foot with hired guides and donkeys or by paying for a 4x4 lift from Loiyangalani. From these settlements you can hike to the summit and back in one long day of roughly eight to ten hours. Reaching the top from lakeside Loiyangalani (about 50 km west) in a single day is not feasible, so a multi-day plan is required. The reward is a summit ringed by isolated cloud forest with views over Lake Turkana to the west and the Chalbi Desert to the east.
SourceClimbing Experiences
Mount Kulal is a remote, rarely climbed mountain near Lake Turkana. The experiences comprise one direct hiking vlog on Mount Kulal, two travelogues ascending to Gatab village and the biosphere-reserve cloud forest, and two overland expedition videos highlighting the remoteness of the Turkana region around the mountain. All emphasise the rough 4x4 terrain, the summit cloud forest, and views over Lake Turkana.
