Description

Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m) is the highest point on the Australian mainland, lying within Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains (part of the Australian Alps / Great Dividing Range) in New South Wales near the Victorian border. Unlike many Oceanian peaks it is not volcanic but a gently rounded granite summit, making it an achievable non-technical day hike. It was named in 1840 by the Polish explorer Paweł Edmund Strzelecki after the Polish-Lithuanian national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko, and it features as one summit in the Kosciuszko (Bass) version of the Seven Summits. The two most popular approaches are from Thredbo — taking the Kosciuszko Express chairlift then walking roughly 13 km return on a raised steel-mesh walkway that protects the fragile alpine vegetation — or from Charlotte Pass via the Summit walk or the longer Main Range loop, which passes glacial lakes such as Blue Lake and Lake Albina, the only glacial lakes on mainland Australia. The terrain is alpine herbfield, granite tors, and seasonal snow, with weather that can change rapidly in any season.

Routes

Main Range loop (Charlotte Pass)

Sedang (non-teknis)
±6–8 jam (±22 km lingkar)

Jalur memutar paling indah: dari Charlotte Pass menyusuri Main Range melewati Blue Lake, Hedley Tarn, Lake Albina, dan Club Lake — satu-satunya danau glasial di daratan utama Australia — sebelum mencapai puncak Kosciuszko dan kembali. Medan alpine terbuka, sebaiknya hanya dilakukan saat cuaca cerah.

Summit Walk via Charlotte Pass (Old Kosciuszko Road)

Sedang (non-teknis)
±6–7 jam (18,6 km pulang-pergi)

Summit Walk via Thredbo (Kosciuszko Express chairlift)

Mudah–sedang (non-teknis)
±4–5 jam (13 km pulang-pergi)

Climbing Experiences

Climbing Mount Kosciuszko is typically a day hike: from Thredbo by riding the Kosciuszko Express chairlift then walking about 13 km return on a steel-mesh walkway to the summit, or from Charlotte Pass via the Summit walk or the longer Main Range loop (about 20–22 km) passing the glacial lakes Blue Lake and Lake Albina. Trip reports highlight the relatively easy, non-technical access, the alpine herbfields and granite tors, the rare mainland-Australian glacial lakes, and weather that can shift quickly so warm layers and rain gear are needed even in summer.
